In May 2005, West Yorkshire Playhouse embarked upon an ambitious project to rehearse and stage three plays within the space of four weeks, under the "BBC Northern Exposure" umbrella, giving each only one week's rehearsal. Non Contact Time, was the first of these - and played to full houses in the Courtyard Theatre.
David played James Granger, an idealistic young teacher, in this story which centres around the staffroom of a Leeds Primary School
It is the last day of term, and the teachers are winding down for the summer holiday and de-mob happy. Granger (David Smith) is still young enough to be idealistic, Browning (John Elkington) lost his ideals years ago and Ms Archer (Katarina Olsson) is disappearing behind her attainment targets. But when a child goes missing the jokes end and panic sets in.
Writer Jodie Marshall's first work, this one-act play was well received, and West Yorkshire Playhouse is currently supporting Jodie with an attachment to the theatre, during which she will write an original full-length play and adaption of a children's novel for the stage.
